Stuart Downing
Apparently Sunderland want him, would you sell? personally if we get Payet signed I would let him go.

one thing to take into account is sunderland may lose Adam Johnson to Prison FC and will need a replacement midfielder

Re: Stuart Downing
If he stays, I hope he has serious competition for his place.

If we get in serious competition for his place, I wouldn't cry if we sell him.

So....erm.

Stuart Downing doesn't' play for us, so they can have him

Re: Stuart Downing
Yes. I don't think he is that great. Apart from a few games at the beginning of last season he has been a disappointment.

Didn't someone say we were interested in Adam Johnson the other day?

Re: Stuart Downing
I would let him go if we can get a decent amount for him and Payet comes in as his replacement, also reckon that Zarate wil be a good understudy for that ACM position that is Downing's most effective position.

Having said that I reckon that if Downing is played in that more central position then he has a good few years left in him... pace isn't an issue there and he has a good footballing brain and I can actually see him getting better with age in that position, but he is and always will be a bottle job... the sort of player that will agree that a purple chair is blue to avoid confrontation!

Re: Stuart Downing
Is it Downing's fault he was shunted out wide to accommodate Nolan?

I'd want to keep him for a while to see how he fares under Bilic.

Re: Stuart Downing
I think we should keep Downing. Won't get a huge fee if sold and he can - CAN - be very good.

Then again, he's probably on stupid wages so may have to go...

Re: Stuart Downing
To move forward you need to retain the better players like Downing but bring in better, such as Payet. Then you will get the best out of both Downing and Payet because there is competition for places.

It's no good bringing in Payet and selling Downing as you end up having Payet going into his comfort zone as he knows he will pretty much play every week. This was the issue with Downing last year.

You want to keep Downing, Noble, Carroll etc to compete against Payet, Obiang, Austin.

It is the weaker players who need to go, such as Nolan, Jarvis, Maiga.

Re: Stuart Downing
No way would I get rid.

As others have said to build you have to retian the right players.

If Payet comes in and gets injured then we'tre back to sqaure one.

For me Downing is good enough for the first team (played in the right position) so keep him and let him and Payet fight it out.

I'd sooner sell

Maiga
Zarate
Jarvis
Nolan

Re: Stuart Downing
I would not sell Downing. We seem to be targetting players that haven't played in the PL yet, Downing is very experienced and on his day can still make something happen out there. Keep him.

Keep him. Yes
Play him on the wing. No

Re: Stuart Downing
Again like other players bought in by the club, I'd like to see what a decent manager can now do with them. Valencia is another one.

Re: Stuart Downing
Depends who we get to replace him. He'd be on a big wage and we're restricted in how much we can spend on wages.

Considering that we might need a big squad for Europe, and since we've got plenty of money to spend on transfers, then maybe we could replace him with a couple of younger players who might cost a lot but be on relatively low wages.
